East Lothian - the area
Musselburgh Old Course Golf Club - Musselburgh, East Lothian - 1774
2.874 yards / par 34 (9 holes). Tape designer unknown.
The world's oldest playable golf course. Mary Queen of Scots played here as early as 1567, but the first documented evidence of play is from 1672. Incidentally, the course is nestled within a horse racing track, which adds to its uniqueness. Has hosted The Open Championship six times. In 2010 they celebrated 150 years since the firstOpenwas held at Musselburgh. Don't miss "Mrs. Formans" a delicious par 4's and pub. The pub is also called Mrs. Formans and is strategically located at the green edge.
On the 19th we recommend: Haggis and a MOCGC 10 Year Old (Specially Bottled for Musselburgh Old Course Golf Club).
Craigielaw Golf Club - Aberlady, East Lothian
6.601 yards / par 71. Tape designer: Donald Steel
Craigielaw is a relatively new Championship Links Course, where the course architect Donald Steel was inspired by the great links courses in the area. For those with hickory clubs, the course is difficult - narrow fairways, steep, turfed bunkers, more like craters, and slippery and heavily undulating greens. Tough is just the name of the game. According to Tiger Woods, it's one of the most challenging courses he's ever played. A real test.
On the 19th we recommend: Haggis and a Glenkinchie 10 Year Old.
Kilspindie Golf Club - Aberlady, East Lothian - 1867
5.502 yards / par 69. Tape designer unknown.
5,500 yards of Traditional Scottish Links - established in 1867. A historic course with a wonderful layout and extremely well maintained. Lots of delicious holes, e.g.. The 8th, "Gosford Bay", a par 3 hole with a tee shot from a plateau where the ball partially flies over the sandy beach. Beautiful doesn't even begin to describe both the holes and the overall experience on this magical course. Delicious links with the sandy beach as "out of bounds", where there are seals spying on you.
On the 19th we recommend: Haggis and a Jackson's Row (Glenkinchie).
Lufness New - Aberlady, Fife - 1894
6,328 yards / par 70. Tape designer: Tom Morris.
An exciting, open course and in the wind from the Forth a really tough, but challenging links, with rough that sometimes the sheep run lost in. A well-maintained, well-designed links created by none other than Old Tom Morris. Good shots are rewarded, but you're punished heavily if you don't park the slicer in the bag. When the wind is blowing you can hear caddies saying; "It will take you three to be up there in two today, Sir". A delicious but fair links course for those with a variety of strokes in their bag.
On the 19th we recommend: Haggis and a Glenkinchie 1990 / 20 Year Old
Gullane Golf Club, No 1 - Gullane, East Lothian - 1882
6.466 yards / par 71. Tape designer: Willie Park Jr.
Golf has been played at Gullane Links since the 1650s. Classic, cool, challenging, beautiful and not least, at the top of Gullande Hill a view that is astonishing. There are dramatic views as you peer out over the sea, towards Edinburgh and Fife, you can even see Kilspindie and, if you turn around, Muirfield. Don't miss a visit to Archies Bairds museum.
On the 19th we recommend: Haggis and a Glenkinchie 1975 / 33 Year Old.
Muirfield- Muirfield, East Lothian - 1891
6.963 yards / par 70. Tape designer: Tom Morris - Harry Colt - Tom Simpson
One of the world's absolute best Championship Links Course's. Unique is only the first name. Old Tom Morris laid out this glorious beauty in 1891. Is challenging, has character, well maintained with panoramic views that are absolutely stunning. Brilliant coastal gem, but a private masterpiece, where an invitation is required to play. If you get the chance - never let it go.
On the 19th we recommend: Haggis and a Glenkinchie 1992.
North Berwick West Links - North Berwick, East Lothian - 1832
6.458 yards / par 71. Band designer: John R. Whitecross - Tom Anderson - Ben Sayers
Golf has been played here since the 17th century. Reminiscent of golf in St Andrews. 1st tee in the middle of the village, then you follow the sea and turn on the 10th. A magical view of the Firth of Forth, the beach and the hills of Fife. A course designed by nature. It's so beautiful it's like walking into a postcard. The par 3 'Redan' is one of the most copied golf holes in the world. One of the coolest links courses nature has created.
On the 19th we recommend: Haggis and a Glenkinchie 12 Year Old.
Winterfield Golf Club - Dunbar, East Lothian - 1935
5,169 yards / par 65. Tape designer: Sir. Clair Cunningham
An excellent 18-hole links course with stunning views of the Firth of Forth, Bass Rock and the Isle of May, with the Lammermuir Hills as a backdrop. You won't be disappointed on this little known, but wonderful course.
Located on the stunning east coast of Scotland at Dunbar. This 18-hole wonder is a great test for a golfer, from the daunting first hole Whelkie Haugh to the challenging eighteenth St Margaret's, but the views are absolutely breathtaking from all holes.
On the 19th we recommend: Haggis and a Secret Stills 05.01 (Glenkinchie) 1987.
Dunbar Golf Club - Dunbar, East Lothian - 1856
6.597 yards / par 71. Tape designer: Tom Morris
A wonderful and unforgettable Championship Links Course. The spirit of Old Tom Morris watches over the course, he redesigned it in 1894. Along the Firth of Forth takes the breath out of every golfer. Following the contours of nature along the coastline, the slightest breeze changes the course's character and makes it a new challenge. An unforgettable classic links with unparalleled views. Flawless finish and a true links challenge.
On the 19th we recommend: Haggis, Belhaven Best and a Glenkinchie 1966.
Fife - the area
The Old Course - St Andrews Links - St Andrews, Fife - 1754
6.721 yards / par 72. Tape designer: Tom Morris - Allan Robertson
The oldest and most iconic golf course in the world. Swilcan Bridge and Hell Bunker are recognised the world over, yet the best thing about the Old Course is that despite its great status it remains a public golf course, open, but certainly still difficult to book for everyone.
On the 19th we recommend: Haggis and a Glengoyne 40 Year Old.
The New Course - St Andrews Links - St Andrews, Fife - 1895
6,625 yards/par 72. Course Designer: Tom Morris as David Honeyman
The oldest "new" course in the world, the second course at the Home of Golf, was built by Keeper of the Green, Tom Morris in 1895 and it was given an "imaginative" name to distinguish itself from its famous neighbor. The new course has a rolling fairways and challenging greens, and is a classic test for a links golfer.
On the 19th we recommend: Haggis and a Glengoyne vintage 1969 25 years.
Jubilee Course - St Andrews Links - St Andrews, Fife - 1897
6,742 yards/par 72. Course designer: David Honeyman as Willie Auchterlonie as Donald Steel
The third championship course at home of golf, Jubilee is considered by many to be the most challenging course in the famous Links area. Built in 1897, it was originally intended for use by ladies and beginners; but then Jubilee was transformed and given an incomparable championship layout in 1988. Hole 15 is absolutely stunning, perhaps with the big hill on the right the most interesting golf hole in St Andrews.
On the 19th we recommend: Haggis and a Glenturret 21 Year Old.
Strathtyrum Course - St Andrews Links - St Andrews, Fife - 1993
5,620 yards/par 69. Course designer: Donald Steel
Strathtyrum was opened in 1993 to complement the tougher championship layouts at the Home of Golf. Although there are few bunkers (15), they are cunningly placed and the emphasis on iron games is therefore great. The greens are large and challenging, but with undulating gradients that can test even the most confident with the putter.
On the 19th we recommend: Haggis and a Glengoyne 17 years.
The Eden Course - St Andrews Links - St Andrews, Fife - 1914
6,250 yards/par 70. Course Designer: Harry Colt as Donald Steel
A little more forgiving than his contemporary lakeside neighbors, the Eden Course was built in 1914 by Harry S. Colt, who was careful to use natural boundaries and difficult bunkers that provide a course full of character, but at the same time are challenging.
On the 19th we recommend: Haggis and a Glenturret Bicentenary 8 Year Old.
Kingsbarns Golf Links - Kingsbarns, Fife - 1753 (1922 & 2000)
7.181 yards / par 72. Tape designer: Mark Parsinen - Kyle Phillips
A course that dates back to the 18th century, but lay fallow and via tons of dirt and sand, a heavily undulating Championship Links Course was built and completed in 2000. Intimately associated with the sea, you can see the North Sea from virtually every hole. As the coastal stretch is tailor-made for a links, designers conjured up and created an incomparable and totally irresistible seaside links. Don't miss this brilliant coastal gem - even if parts of it are contrived.
On the 19th we recommend: Haggis and a Glenturret 1966 / Bot. 1993.
Crail Golfing Society - Crail, Fife - 1786
5,922 yards / par 69. Tape designer: Tom Morris
The seventh oldest golf club in the world. Stunning views along the coastline and one of the very best links courses, a pure gem and it feels like the hand of golfing legend Old Tom Morris is watching over the course. A stunning start, you hit from the 1st tee towards the sea and then follow the shoreline, where the slightest breeze makes it an exciting challenge. The new course "Craighead" is also worth a visit, it was awarded for example. 2009 Golf Course Architect of the Year Award.
On the 19th we recommend: Haggis and a Glengoyne Middle Cut 1967/30 Year Old.
The Golf House Club, Elie - Elie, Fife - 1875
6.273 yards / par 70. Tape designer: Tom Morris - James Braid
The Golfhouse Club, Elie - classic links. Charm and tradition very nicely packaged. Hole 11 par 3 from the tee has to be one of the most beautiful golf holes in the world. Here you play along the cut line and the wind from the Firth of Forth makes the course a new experience - every round. It feels like the magic hand of Old Tom Morris is watching over the course. It has character, tradition, poetic scenery, is well maintained and leaves absolutely no one indifferent. Holes 6 to 14 are simply breathtaking.
On the 19th we recommend: Haggis and a Glenturret (Tayside) 8 Year Old.
Lundin Golf Club - Lundin Links, Fife - 1868
6.371 yards / par 71. Tape designer: Tom Morris - James Braid
A magnificent and old Tom Morris / James Braid-designed golf course. Lundin Links, just 20 minutes from St Andrews, is one of Scotland's gems. Historically a qualifying course for The Open Championship, when played in St. Andrews and this is by no means a coincidence. Lundin Golf Club is also renowned for its beautiful greens and some of the most demanding par 4s of any links course.
A fantastic links, where a spectacular out of bounds boundary is the old railway line and not least that you have to take into account the strategically placed and exciting bunkers. Lundin is a real interesting challenge for the thinking and strategically playing golfer, where just strategy from the tee instead of power and distance is rewarded heavily in the scorecard.
On the 19th we recommend: Haggis and a Glengoyne 1969 / The Farewell Dram.
Leven Links Golf Course - Leven, Fife - 1867
6,506 yards/par 71. Course designer: Tom Morris
Wonderful genuine links. A true golfoas. It's charm in square, here we're talking history and attitude. Genuinely naturally undulating fairways, stripy and rough grass in the ruff, large greens and a finish that is outstanding. And not least, the two closing holes, they must be among the coolest you can play – the recording of the demonic Scoonie Burn is outstanding. Golf Monthly: "One of the best stands of bents and fescues in Scotland"
On the 19th we recommend: Haggis and a Glenturret 1979 / 29 Year Old / Cask.

Machrie Golf Links - Isle of Islay, Argyll, West Coast - 1891
6,250 yards / par 70. Tape designer: Willie Campbell
Classic and wonderfully beautiful links on the golden sands of Laggan Bay. Nostalgia, stunningly undulating fairways, naturally sculpted into the sand dunes, greens that are absolutely stunning, not one is the same as the other, incredibly charming shifts. The surroundings shine, panoramic views that are absolutely stunning, no by the way - everything shines on this natural masterpiece. But when the weather gods are annoyed, it can rain vertically and blow so that a pair of 3's becomes either full drive or calm wedge.
On the 19th we recommend: Haggis and a Port Ellen 1981 / Islay Festival 2008.
The Machrihanish Golf Club - Campbeltown, Argyll, West Coast - 1876
6.462 yards / par 70. Tape designer: Tom Morris
Perhaps the most spectacular opening in the world. From the tee you hit across the Atlantic onto the fairway. A light breeze makes any golfer nervous. A tough start, but the rest of the holes and the surroundings take your breath away. This gem is beautifully and naturally carved into the sand dunes of the Kintyre Peninsula, overlooking the islands of Jura and Islay. The sunsets are nothing short of dramatic and the air is pleasant due to the Gulf Stream. A hidden idyll, a sheer delight to play, stunning finishes, challenging undulating fairways and greens. And just the sounds of nature, it's quiet and all you can hear is the sea and the birds. Perfection - this is Golf Heaven.
On the 19th we recommend: Haggis and if you've been playing well grab a Springbank 50 Year Old/Millennium Set, if it's raining and it's drizzly a smoky Longrow or try the 1973/First Distillation and if it's sunny grab a triple-distilled unsmoked Hazelburn/Directors Bottling or their own Machrihanich Niblick (Springbank).

For over a hundred years it has offered a world-class seaside links course. Kilmarnock has everything you would expect from a links course. An outstanding reputation. The course is impressive, has everything. It's beautiful, it's beautifully designed, it's got narrow, heavily undulating fairways, fast, soapy greens, blind holes, it's endlessly varied but it's really tough. An unparalleled golfing adventure until the 19th, which has atmosphere.
On the 19th we recommend: Haggis and a Glengoyne Middle Cut 1967/30 Year Old.

Glasgow Golf Club - the world's ninth oldest golf club is endowed with two superb golf courses. Killermont and Gailes Links. Killermont is a parkland course, but Gailes is an outstandingly beautiful, delicious, inspiring, tough and challenging links. Designed by Willie Park Jr in 1912 and the clubhouse also has character. Wonderfully situated between Troon and Irvine on the Ayrshire coast. This is traditional links at its absolute best. Surrounded by Turnberry, Royal Troon and Prestwick. So you can easily stay in the area for a while......

6.106 yards / par 71. Tape designer: Mr. Morris
Top ranked Championchip Course, host to several prestige competitions. The clubhouse is centrally located overlooking the Isle of Arran, strategically placed in the middle of the course. A links that offers it all. Rolling narrow fairways, mighty rough, immaculate green placements, but fair. The south-facing holes along the sea line are nothing short of nourishment for the soul. Especially the 7th, which in addition to being spectacular, is a pristine natural hole. Bring several shots, a light breeze can make it a challenging test. True links feeling, here it's all about pushing the ball under the wind.
On the 19th we recommend: Haggis and a Rosebank 8 Year Old / Bot.1970s.
Irvine Golf Club - Bogside, Irvine, Ayrshire - 1887

Royal Troon Golf Club (Old Course) - Troon, Ayrshire - 1878
7.175 yards / par 71. Tape designer: George Strath - Willie Fernie
A traditional out-and-back Course. The opening holes along the Firth of Clyde feel gorgeous, but human and offer panoramic views that are absolutely stunning. You can see Ailsa Craig to the south and the spectacular mountains of the Isle of Arran to the west. Then it gradually begins to change, from meek, to passionate, to angry and finally brutal. Is known as one of the absolute best, but also most demanding Championship courses in the world. If you survive to the 19th, you become an immortal golfer.

6.544 yards / par 71. Tape designer: Mr. Morrism - James Braid
The home of the Open Championship. The world's first Open was played at Prestwick in 1860 and was won by Willie Park from Musselburgh. There is tradition and history here too in the form of Old Tom Morris who worked as Keeper of the Green, and as Ball and Club Maker before returning to St Andrews in 1864. The course is impressive, fascinating and delicious, but can also be ruthless with its narrow fairways, fast greens, hidden holes, crater-deep peat-buried bunkers, where there are wooden stairs to climb. The 17th "Alps" is no exception. The strength of the course also lies in the outstanding finish on each hole.
On the 19th we recommend: Haggis and a Glengoyne 40 Year Old.

Turnberry - ranked top 10 in the world and we understand why. Stunning and astonishing natural scenery, a fairytale walkway on the Firth of Clyde, with cliffs over the Mull of Kintyre and Isle of Arran. When the wind is on along the coastline, smartness, control and improvisation are required - on every hole. Outstanding finish. No sand dunes to take the gusts, in the slightest breeze it's tough. A fierce challenge, requiring many strokes. A classic and resilient golfing treasure.

The sixth oldest golf course in the world. Royal Aberdeen Balgownie Links - it's beautiful, like stepping straight into a postcard. The stretch along the shoreline of the North Sea is majestic. Especially the first nine holes, considered by many to be the best in the world. The fairways are undulating and naturally carved out between the dunes, the rough awkward, the greens soapy, in other words, you are rewarded for good shots but punished for bad ones. The links feel is absolutely stunning and absolutely unbeatable. The last nine, which is higher up, offers outstanding views of the sea, but also a lot of wind.
On the 19th we recommend: Haggis and a Glen Garioch Bicentenary 37 Year Old

Fantastic links course, known for its hard undulating fairways, the sometimes nasty and lush grass rough, fast, slippery greens and deep turfed bunkers. A worthy and fair test. A links that, due to the wind from the Firth of Tay, changes character hour by hour. Only a hard-pressed Midiron from Panmure and once there a full Mashie, and you're in Carnustie. So you can easily stay in the area for a while and get five top courses in the bargain.
